Every year on this day, June 5th, the world comes together to celebrate World Environment Day, which remains a key event to promote environmental protection, raise awareness about climate change, pollution and sustainability in public and private domain.
For governments, civil society, and environmental groups, it has become mandatory to put their to efforts to mark World Environment Day with a slew of activities and campaigns.
Tech firms and Corporates
However, tech firms and corporates are not far behind to play their part and taking up their responsibilities and initiatives to observe the World Environment Day 2025. Their efforts and actions are not just a way to mark this event, but also to reduce environmental impact, achieve sustainability, and meet ESG goals.
This year, on World Environment Day 2025, many of these tech firms and corporates are focusing on different themes as part of their commitments and efforts mark this day.
Innovation and Sustainability
For this Indian data centre operator, RackBank, this year’s environment day theme focuses on true innovation and sustainability. “On World Environment Day, we’re reminded that true innovation must be sustainable at its core. Our carbon-neutral AI data centres reflect this belief—combining performance with purpose,” says Narendra Sen, Founder and CEO of RackBank.
The company claims that its patented Varuna Liquid Immersion Cooling System, not only reduces cooling costs by up to 70% but also improves energy efficiency. This is how it is enabling the company and its clients minimise environmental impact.
“Our approach to sustainable technology goes beyond energy, and it includes thoughtful resource management across the infrastructure lifecycle, including efforts to reduce material and plastic waste,’ adds Sen.
To further its efforts, the company is minimising the usage of single-use plastic and optimising material reuse and adopting eco-conscious alternatives across data centre operations and deployment practices.
“By rethinking how we build, power, and scale digital infrastructure, we are proving that technology can grow without compromising the health of our planet. Sustainability isn’t a side initiative—it’s a design principle,” states Sen.
Smart IT
Like RackBank, Orient Technologies, a Mumbai-based IT solutions provider, is focusing on green digital infrastructures and performance with smart IT practices. “This World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to driving sustainability through smarter IT practices,” says Ajay Sawant, Chairman and MD, Orient Technologies Limited.
“We help our clients, adopt responsible IT lifecycle management by maximising asset utilisation, extending hardware life, and ensuring environmentally safe disposal,” he adds.
According to Savant, these practices not only reduce electronic and plastic waste but it also support a more circular, low-impact approach to technology. “By embedding sustainability into every stage of the IT lifecycle, we’re helping businesses build greener digital infrastructures without compromising performance,” adds Savant.
Environmental impact of data centres
Today’s businesses and organisations runs on data, data centres and substantially IT dependent. However, data centres consume very high energy and water and emit enormous amount of heat causing environmental impact.
Data centres’ environmental impact has now become a new challenge for tech firms, particularly those in semicondcutors, data centre and digital infrastructure.
“To address this growing challenge, the industry must embrace smarter, more efficient technologies,” says Amit Luthra, MD of Lenovo ISG India.
The company’s Neptune liquid cooling technology claims to remove up to 98% of system heat through direct water cooling, slashing power usage by up to 40% and reducing reliance on energy-hungry air conditioning. It also enables heat reuse for building heating or cooling, supporting a circular energy model, according to Luthra.
“As AI and high-performance computing evolve, adopting sustainable innovation like Neptune is no longer optional; it’s essential. Its a proof that digital growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,” states Luthra.
Aligning environmental actions with global ESG goals
Interestingly, today some companies are aligning their local regulatory environmental actions with global ESG goals in a bid to achieve a large-scale sustainable future impact.
“On this World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building a sustainable future through measurable action — from reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and scaling renewable electricity to recycling over 89% of our waste and 55% of our wastewater,” says Hitesh Garg, VP and India MD of NXP Semiconductors.
“Supported by global certifications, strong oversight, and continuous workforce training, our efforts are rooted in accountability and action,” adds Garg.
According to Garg, these steps not only reflect NXP’s global ESG goals but also align closely with India’s net zero ambitions — a national mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070. “Together, we are turning environmental ambition into action and, action into long-term impact,” states Garg.
Plastic pollution – a pressing global challenge
However, plastic pollution remains one common issue across industries and segments around the world. At times, businesses and companies in the consumer space blamed for plastic pollution and waste.
For Acer India, plastic pollution is the key focus on World Environment Day 2025. Acer India’s Associate Director and Head of Marketing, Sooraj Balakrishnan terms plastic pollution as a “pressing global challenge.” “It needs a fundamental rethink how materials are produced, used and discarded,” emphasizes Balakrishnan.
“At Acer, this urgency has shaped our approach towards sustainability through initiatives like Earthion, where we are actively working to reduce plastic use – eliminate single use plastics in packaging and incorporating post-consumer recycled materials in products such as the Acer Vero series,” explains Balakrishnan.
Notably, Acer is not only focusing on product design but its packing as well. The company is transitioning to a fully recyclable, paper-based packaging and partnering across its supply chain to embed sustainable practices.
“These efforts are part of our commitment to minimizing environmental impact and moving towards 100% renewable energy by 2035,” adds Balakrishnan.
