Mumbai: Tata Steel, a global steel manufacturing company, and Google Cloud have announced a major expansion of their strategic partnership to architect the future of steel and advance its unified, enterprise-wide agentic AI strategy.
Using Google Cloud’s unified technology stack, Tata Steel is rapidly scaling autonomous capabilities across its vast global organisation, successfully deploying a fleet of over 300 specialised AI agents such as Zen AI, TDA and Safety EyeQ in just nine months to drive efficiency and precision across its global operations.
“Working with Google Cloud has allowed us to turn AI from a technical experiment into a specialized partner for every employee. This isn’t just about new tools; it’s about a continuous engine of execution that enables our people to act on insights instantly,” said Jayanta Banerjee, CIO – Tata Steel.
“From predicting asset maintenance to reducing customer response times, we are using agentic AI to simplify the most complex parts of our business and drive execution at an entirely new scale,” added Banerjee.
“While many industrial players are still navigating the complexities of digital transformation, Tata Steel has moved at unprecedented speed to deploy AI at a scale few in the industry have achieved,” said Sashi Sreedharan, MD – Google Cloud India.
“Their success demonstrates what is possible when an organization anchors its strategy in a unified AI and data ecosystem. By creating a new blueprint for autonomous business processes at scale, Tata Steel has demonstrated that the synergy between a unified data cloud and generative AI is the key to turning industrial complexity into a distinct, data-driven competitive edge,” added Sreedharan.
Turning data into a competitive edge
Specialised AI is only as powerful as the operational data that fuels it, and Tata Steel’s early investment in a consolidated data architecture on Google Cloud has enabled a shift from fragmented tools to a unified, enterprise-wide execution engine.
This transformation is driven by two key platforms that connect complex data with real-world action:
- The first is Zen AI, an internal low-code platform empowering a new generation of developers. It enables employees, including software developers and frontline managers, to build, test and deploy specialised AI agents. Built on Google Cloud’s Agent Development Kit and integrated with BigQuery and Google Cloud Storage, Zen AI unifies structured and unstructured data such as video and documents within a secure framework. This has turned Tata Steel’s workforce into a distributed engine of innovation, allowing agile teams to deploy enterprise-grade AI solutions with speed and precision.
- The second is the Tata Steel Digital Assistant (TDA), a centralised portal that brings together once-siloed information into a single interface for decision making. It can query global public data, internal enterprise systems and proprietary user data. By combining real-time global news and geopolitical sentiment with commodity data, TDA delivers predictive market intelligence, helping the company stay ahead of supply chain shifts and market fluctuations. It also converts organisational knowledge, such as call recordings and PDFs, into actionable insights.
Driving organisational efficiency and transforming employee experience with AI
Tata Steel is using agentic AI to reduce administrative bottlenecks and streamline operations. TDA supports the HR helpdesk by resolving over 70% of routine employee queries autonomously. Efficiency extends to core business functions through business process agents that manage workflows such as invoice processing, GST classifications and contract analysis, allowing teams to focus on higher-value tasks.
These deployments are supported by scalable infrastructure on Google Cloud Run, enabling instant handling of demand spikes while scaling to zero when idle. With access to over 200 models on Google Cloud’s AI Agent Platform, Tata Steel ensures optimal model selection alongside strong governance.
AI-driven safety and operational excellence on the shop floor
The agentic ecosystem is also enhancing safety and efficiency across the manufacturing floor. By integrating AI into workflows, the Tata Group company has moved from traditional monitoring to proactive, real-time intervention.
Safety EyeQ analyses live video feeds in high-risk zones to ensure adherence to SOPs, identifying hazards and triggering real-time alerts. This capability extends through Asset Sphere agents, which monitor equipment health and enable proactive maintenance, reducing downtime. Powered by Google’s Large Language and Vision–Language Models, the same system also improves customer service by analysing complaint data, detecting issues from images and reducing turnaround time by 50%.
