Posted by Kolar, Karnataka: In a significant push to bridge the digital divide and enhance technical education in rural India, Samsung Semiconductor India Research (SSIR) has launched its first Samsung Skill Development Centre at the Government Polytechnic College in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Karnataka state.
The initiative, part of SSIR’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, aims to equip students with industry-relevant skills in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Robotics, Automation, and Cybersecurity. The centre houses five state-of-the-art laboratories designed to offer hands-on training aligned with current industry needs.
“This initiative marks a pivotal step in enabling a hands-on experience for students in rural Karnataka. We fully support the Government of India’s mission on skill development and are committed to bridging the digital divide,” said Balajee Sowrirajan, EVP and MD – SSIR.
“By empowering students with knowledge in AI, IoT, and other emerging technologies, we aim to create limitless opportunities and secure India’s place in the global digital economy,” added Sowrirajan.
The newly launched labs have advanced equipment and training tools to promote multi-disciplinary learning. Students will gain practical exposure that supplements traditional curricula, preparing them for careers in high-demand technology fields.
The launch ceremony drew significant attention from both government and industry stakeholders. Among those present were Dr. Roopkala M Shashidhar, Chairperson, Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation; Manjushree N, Commissioner, Department of Collegiate and Technical Education; and Geethanjali S, Principal of the host institution, alongside over 500 students, faculty members, and representatives from Samsung and the Government of Karnataka.
This Skill Development Centre builds upon SSIR’s previous efforts under the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) programme, which trained over 1,000 students and teachers in AI and IoT across 37 polytechnic institutions in Karnataka. That initiative included infrastructure upgrades, access to training kits, and curriculum-driven modules designed to reinforce foundational tech skills in underserved regions.
By expanding access to advanced technology education outside urban centers, Samsung aims to nurture the next generation of engineers, innovators, and problem-solvers from across India.
