From Precision Watchmaking to Global Tech Pioneer

Though the Epson brand is five decades old, its roots trace back to 1942 in Japan’s watchmaking industry, where precision craftsmanship laid the foundation for future breakthroughs. The launch of the EP-101, the world’s first compact electronic printer in 1968, propelled Epson to global recognition and inspired the brand name Epson, or “son of EP,” symbolising successive generations of innovation.

  • Printing: Epson’s proprietary Micro Piezo inkjet technology and the introduction of high-capacity ink tank printers in 2010 disrupted traditional printing paradigms. Epson’s PrecisionCore printheads power commercial and industrial applications, making it a leading player in industrial inkjet technology.
  • Projection: Epson pioneered compact full-color LCD video projectors in 1989 and remains the world’s No. 1 projector brand for 23 years, including dominating the Indian market for nearly a decade. Its cutting-edge HTPS panels deliver bright, sharp visuals for everything from corporate presentations to immersive entertainment.
  • Robotics and Wearables: Building on watchmaking precision, Epson developed high-speed SCARA robots in the 1980s, now holding the largest global market share. Additionally, Epson’s quartz crystal technologies are embedded in smartphones, wearables, and precision agriculture devices.
