VMware completes $2.3 billion Pivotal acquisition

Bangalore: VMware has completed the $2.7 billion Pivotal acquisition. With this acquisition, VMware has now expanded its applications platform business, leveraging Pivotal’s cloud-native platform.

Pivotal – a wholly owned subsidiary of VMware

Pivotal’s Class A common stock was de-listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). And stock trade was suspended prior to the market opening on Monday. Pivotal will now operate as VMware’s wholly owned subsidiary.

Pivotal’s native -cloud offerings will be to VMware Tanzu portfolio of products and services with Kubernetes as infrastructure foundation.

Importantly, the combination of Pivotal’s offerings and VMware Taznu will speed up modern applications development. This will help developers increase their productivity.

VMware’s new applications platform business unit

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger has named Ray O’Farrell to lead VMware’s new Modern Applications Platform business unit. This new formed unit is a combination of Pivotal and VMware Cloud Native Applications teams.

“As Pivotal is now part of VMware, I want to thank the Pivotal leadership team for building a great company,” said Gelsinger.

“Together, we’re poised to be the leading enabler of Kubernetes with a deep understanding of both operators and developers,” he added.

Beyond cloud and software giants

Digital transformation and the applications that drive it, should not be restricted only to cloud and software giants,” said Ray O’Farrell, EVP and GM – Modern Applications Platform Business Unit, VMware.

He believed that modern application development solutions and practices need to be easily accessible to everyday enterprises globally.

“With Pivotal’s developer capabilities as the foundation, we’ll focus on delivering consumable, enterprise-ready cloud native offerings to customers to help them achieve better business outcomes,” added O’Farrell.

Developer productivity and business connections

VMware and Pivotal’s mutual customers

Raython is among the many mutual customers of VMware and Pivotal.
