In the same report, OpenAI revealed that it has started recruiting to expand its local team. The company has posted three sales roles in India, each requiring at least seven years of experience, with the possibility of more openings in the future. Currently, OpenAI employs just one individual in India—Pragya Misra, who leads public policy and partnerships after joining the firm last year.
The expansion will allow OpenAI to build stronger partnerships with the Indian government, businesses and developers. India’s rapidly growing tech ecosystem, coupled with its large pool of skilled talent, makes it an attractive market for AI-focused companies. OpenAI is also aligning itself with the Indian government’s ambitious $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, which aims to develop large and small-scale language models for the region.
This move also underscores OpenAI’s ongoing effort to shape the regulatory landscape for AI technologies in one of the world’s most populous nations. While India presents vast opportunities, it is also a market that can be challenging for global companies to navigate effectively.
India is now the second-largest market for ChatGPT by users. Earlier this week, OpenAI introduced a more affordable monthly plan, priced below $5, to attract a larger customer base in India. The company continues to offer its basic free plan, as well as premium subscription options.
Additionally, OpenAI is planning to host its first developer day in India later this year, marking a key milestone in its growing commitment to the Indian market.
