Posted by Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has issued notices to Meta, Google and microblogging platform X, flagging concerns over the growing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to create and distribute deepfake and manipulated content, according to media reports.
The notices follow a public interest litigation (PIL) that calls for stricter oversight of AI-generated media and stronger enforcement mechanisms for content moderation. The court has directed these tech companies to file their responses by May 8.
A bench led by Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal highlighted the systemic risks posed by synthetic media, particularly in the absence of timely intervention by digital intermediaries. The court noted that the increasing sophistication of AI tools is enabling the rapid spread of misleading content, raising concerns for enterprises, public institutions and the broader digital ecosystem.
Emphasising regulatory compliance, the Gujarat High Court reiterated that intermediaries must adhere to due diligence requirements under India’s IT framework. It stressed the need for faster takedown processes and greater accountability in responding to lawful requests from authorities.
The Gujarat High Court also underscored the importance of operational alignment between platforms and law enforcement agencies. It directed intermediaries to strengthen integration with government-backed systems designed to streamline reporting and removal workflows, signalling a push towards more standardised, technology-driven enforcement.
The development comes at a time when enterprises are increasingly relying on digital platforms for customer engagement, brand visibility and transactions. The proliferation of deepfake content not only raises misinformation risks but also poses reputational and financial threats to businesses operating in highly regulated sectors.
For large technology platforms, the case adds to mounting regulatory scrutiny around AI governance, content moderation and platform accountability. It also reflects a broader shift towards tightening compliance expectations as governments seek to balance innovation with safeguards against misuse.
