Posted by Chennai: GS1 India has opened its expanded Chennai Development Centre, with the aim to support India’s digital transformation journey. The upgraded facility consolidates development activities, along with a stronger team to upscale capabilities and drive innovation in 2D migration, traceability and AI-led supply chain solutions.
Following the initial launch of its Chennai tech lab in 2023, this expansion transforms the facility into a comprehensive hub for GS1 India’s digital backbone. The Chennai Development Centre will now focus on the large-scale deployment of flagship platforms such as DataKart, the Smart Consumer App, ClickIt app and traceability solutions.
With this, GS1 India is better equipped to help Indian industries meet emerging global requirements like the Digital Product Passport (DPP), Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA) and EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), through AI-driven traceability and standardised digital tools, while preparing for the global transition to 2D barcodes under GS1 Ambition 2027.
This expanded facility’s focus is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate data verification, ensuring that the billions of scans occurring globally are backed by accurate, high-integrity product information.
“In today’s rapidly changing world, this centre will build the latest tools and apps to support small and medium enterprises, the backbone of India’s economy. By empowering these enterprises amidst digital transformation, we aim to ensure they remain competitive and future-ready,” GS1 India CEO S. Swaminathan, said, during the centre’s inauguration.
The facility is strategically designed to address the growing demand for transparency in the consumer goods and healthcare sectors. The team is tasked to upgrade the UI/UX and backend intelligence of applications like Smart Consumer App, enabling shoppers to access reliable data via their smartphones.
It also serves as the engineering engine for interoperable industry solutions and trusted data standards as adopted in over 150 countries.
